Following a journey by sea of 600 miles from BAE Systems' shipyard at Govan, the huge mid section of the UK's first Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier has now arrived at Babcock Rosyth, where the aircraft carrier will now be assembled.
After arriving in Rosyth, a complex operation to sink the submersible barge used to transport the hull section was undertaken, allowing Lower Block 03 and the pipe tunnels, which had been sealed with the RISE Nofirno system, to enter the water for the first time.
Before its departure from Govan, CSD was asked to assist BAE personnel ensure that the pipe tunnels were sealed correctly so that water tight integrity would be maintained in this safety critical area.
CSD are now working in close partnership with the RISE Nofirno installation teams at Babcock Rosyth in order to complete the outfitting and assembly phase on this section of the ship. CSD are currently in the process of providing a full training programme to the Babcock installation teams, responsible for fitting SLIPSIL and RISE Nofirno throughout the aircraft carriers, helping ensure their fire safety and water-tight integrity.
Each 65,000 tonne aircraft carrier will provide the armed forces with a four acre military operating base which can be deployed worldwide. The vessels will be versatile enough to be used for operations ranging from supporting war efforts to providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief.
